Now there finally is a surge of people realising how a monopolised structure can royally fuck everyone over that relies on it, yet they still don’t get the point. They still do not understand what the issue at hand is.
In this case, Discord’s Age Verification blew up as the trendy “this is bad” topic of the month, a topic sending more shockwaves throughout the world than an invasion of a sovereign fucking country and news more pressing than thousands of people being put in concentration camps or getting slimed out in masses in a strip somewhere, now listen up twink, YOU WILL HAVE TO SCAN YOUR ID TO CHAT TO E-KITTENS!!!! BOOOOO!!!
How is this news in any way shocking? How is everyone losing their marbles at a privacy overreach that has been expected for years? Discord are irresponsible with data now? A Peter Thiel funded third party identification software is nefarious and gives precious data to Thiel’s bottom bitch Altman? Ohoo boy! I did not see that coming!
Sarcasm aside, this is a good thing. Not the fact that it is happening, but the fact that more normal people are getting a little wake up call in terms of what the platform they are using actually is like; Yet they don’t truly get it.
They really, really don’t!
Watch some videos on the matter, read some articles, look around and ask your friends as to what to do now, you will get the same few responses and ideas at nauseum.
- Let’s just use a TeamSpeak!
- Let’s just use Matrix! (don’t use Matrix, but this is a good thought)
- Someone else needs to make a Discord alternative that is better!

So on and so on. Much of the discussion revolves around some retarded notion of just waiting for another centralised service to come along and give an alternative to Discord that is in every way shape or form not just approximately as good, but absolutely murders what Discord has on offer in general.
You want the Direct messaging, the multi user text chatting, free guilds and server hosting, impeccable call quality and that for free and most importantly, managed by someone that is not them.
Big streamers say “Durr Hurr, we need an alternative” but then tepidly sit back letting the world go by them, waiting on instant messaging Jesus to come by and hand them an everything app that is fit for the gods, not understanding that the age verification scandal will inevitably just repeat itself anyhow.
People of the slave/tool/plebian/workerdrone class like you or me, oftentimes have no concept of operational costs and will sit there and interrobang on about how the thing that you should host yourself should be free for you to use, something that is literally impossible to do, demanding revolutionary action, but only if they themselves don’t have to sacrifice a little moolah or electricity bills or even just an afternoon.
Then there are the money makers capitalising on Discord “fumbling” the age ID shit and while some projects like Stoat or Fluxer do gain more traction, others like TeamSpeak run on outdated business models which don’t make sense in the dementedly tech illiterate modern age.
There also are the people who bang on about using Matrix, only to subscribe to the Matrix.org homeserver and surrounding themselves with droves of pedophiles through federated systems, which aren’t even secure and most definitely are scraped by multiple governments and law enforcement agencies, and many of those people recommending Matrix, never went through with actually installing a server, never understanding how terrible the process actually is, setting up too many normalos up for failure and security issues along the way too.
In the end, I personally went with Zulip, I think you should too. It is something like a fusion between Slack and something like Discord and giving people the ability to do video conferencing over Jitsi Meet.
It isn’t Discord, and I actually like the fact that it isn’t, for text chatting it actually is far superior due to how topics and channels work and all that jazz.
